Are you thinking of adding to or changing your landscape? You probably already know that you should create a budget and you should choose a high-quality landscaping company. But, don’t forget that you also need a plan!

5 Simple Tips for Planning Your Landscaping Project

Enhancing your landscape is a great way to add maximum enjoyment to the space you have and can also boost your property’s value. It can be very helpful to create a well-thought-out plan that can transform your space.

Here are five simple landscaping tips you can use to start planning your project:

1. Start early.

Don’t let the weather stop you from getting started — especially if it’s cold in your neck of the woods. Wintertime is actually a great time to start planning your spring landscaping project. Ideally, you want to start mapping out your plans up to six months before the start of your project.

2. Plan properly.

How large is your yard? Are there any drainage issues? Do you know what type of plants you like? Will you focus on the front, back, or sides of your landscape? How will you phase in your project? What will you start with first? What are some of your goals? Do you want to improve curb appeal or do you envision fun pool parties? Do you need a play space for your children? What’s your budget and time frame for completion? Do you need financing and does your preferred landscaping company offer that?

These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself as you start mapping out a plan.

3. Sketch your ideas.

You don’t need to be an artist to visually map out your ideas for changing your landscape. Grab a sketch pad and draw the areas you’d like to improve and include features that you love. For example, you might add a patio by the back entrance of your property or include a cutting garden on the side of your property that gets a lot of sun.

4. Find a licensed contractor.

One of the most important steps is finding a certified (e.g., ICPI) and licensed (ask for an MHIC number) landscaping firm. Also, have a look at their testimonials and check outside resources (like Houzz) for client reviews.

Remember those questions that you need to ask yourself during the planning phase? Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers. Qualified landscaping professionals with a proven industry track record can help you develop a smart plan that suits your budget and that includes features that will provide long-lasting enjoyment for you and your family.

5.  Store your information.

There’s no point in going through the time and effort of researching and planning and not being able to find it when you need it. Consider storing your sketches, notes, ideas, landscaper’s phone number, and other information in a binder or use an app like Evernote or Trello to keep everything all in one place.

  1. Rick Vellone

We want your opinion on, filling an area appropriate 20 sq ft, by 8 inches high. Would we start with a peat moss , mulch and or dirt?

Hi Rick – That depends on what it is for. If you are creating a bed, we generally use a 3:1 ratio of screened soil to some type of composted product, like peat moss. We use LeafGro, but peat moss is fine. After the bed is made, we apply a pre-emergent weed control (a granular product that prevents weed seeds from germinating), then edge, then use 2” of shredded hardwood mulch. We also use a balanced fertilizer for any ornamentals we plant prior to mulch too. Hope that helps!
